About the Author

J. Irving is retired Brigadier General Jesus Irving Lomeda of the Signal Corps, a proud Mapitagan – a graduate of PMA Class 1980, a survivor of the 1981 Pata Island Massacre where 119 of his comrades, including his battalion commander and his radioman (dying in his arms) were killed by the MNLF on that single day.

For his gallantry, General Canieso ’56 awarded him the Gold Cross. After surviving a nighttime ambush, where he was left for dead by his battalion commander Colonel Ed Pangan ‘68, wounded, Canieso asked him, “Meron ka bang anting-anting?” (Do you have an amulet?)

Handpicked by General Montaño ’58 to join Narcotics Command (NARCOM) in 1983, he later served in the Bicol Region where he was court-martialed for Article of War (AW) #94 under General Tadiar ’59 while imprisoned; but he was eventually acquitted. From Infantry, he then transferred to the Signal Corps, specializing in information systems; and later, in cybersecurity.

He faced a cybercrime charge from General Roa (JAG) for posting his essay “False Hope” on the DND Facebook page, criticizing favoritism in the AFP during the time of Secretary Gazmin ‘68. Though reprimanded by CSAFP General David ’77, Colonel Querubin ’79, a medal of valor recipient, advised him to hang on, not to resign. His perseverance was rewarded when CSAFP General Oban ’79 and CGPA General Ortiz ’79 (a Medal of Valor recipient) promoted him to Brigadier General, despite a standing ban.

After retiring in 2012, he was accepted in Canada as a skilled-worker in computers. In 2016, under President Duterte, he was invited by Secretary Lorenzana ’73 and Usec. Luna ’75 to head Cyber and Information Technologies at the Defense Department, where he co-chaired the ASIAN ADMM+ Expert Working Group on Cybersecurity.

During his 22-K scholarship, as full time student, he was hired by HomeCredit of Insular Life and Tahanan of PLDT to develop, manage and maintain their Financial Information Systems.

A respected cybersecurity expert, the author holds a Master’s in Information Management (MSIM) from Ateneo de Manila University and completed the Network Systems and Security Professional (NSSP) program at the University of British Columbia. In 2019, he received the PMAAA Cavalier Award for Special Field (Technology: Cybersecurity).

He later founded Kerberus Corporation, a cybersecurity company, as its founding chairman. He continues to write blogs at www.mistah.org and has authored the book, entitled “A Time to Heal: Bloodbath at Pata Island, Sulu”, which is available at the AFP Museum, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
